Summer used to be the season of kicking back. The pace slowed down, school was out, the days were longer, and you could eat outside.
This summer however, I’ve been running around at breakneck speed. I’ve got more work so I’m working more hours. The evenings are often spent writing up summaries, editing articles, or preparing for the next day. The construction on the roads creates havoc with my routes and when you add a few water main or gas main breaks – it adds to the challenge of keeping calm behind the wheel.
I’m trying to keep up with all of the social media as well. I tweet, I blog, I link in and link up. I post my book reviews on Goodreads and I upload photos every now and then on Instagram. I play Words With Friends, Drawsome and Scramble (which I am truly terrible at). I’m avoiding Pinterest because I just don’t think I can add one more site to see on my list of sites to see.
Everyone I talk to says they are running the same race. It’s just the way things are today. Oh well. They can’t talk long – they have to run on to the next thing.
I was shocked when my doctor told me that my usually low blood pressure was bouncing off the wall. The knot in my stomach from always feeling slightly behind was making her unhappy. And when my doctor isn’t happy with me – we share that emotion.
I’m making a few changes and hoping they show the desired outcome. It’s only been a week, so it’s too soon to tell. But I do know that it doesn’t matter what season it is – I need to slow down and smell the roses – or whatever flowers you prefer. Drive slower, talk slower, eat slower, walk slower. Maybe I could try to type slower!
I took myself to get a massage this week. You might think that’s no big deal but rarely get massages. It feels a little indulgent to me and the time and money could be used in so many other ways. But I thought it would be good to have an hour where I wasn’t interacting with anyone. I could have the tension rubbed out of me (well some of it anyway!) and relax my breathing for an extended period of time.
When I checked in on FourSquare, my cousin commented “Oh please – you don’t slow down!.” She’s right! This is why I’m seriously considering doing this on a regular basis.
Although I conduct Stress Management programs, I don’t care for them all that much. You don’t really manage your stress; you manage your work and your time and yourself. It’s time for me do exactly that.
Smell the flowers, or if you prefer – the aromatherapy scent. But inhale slowly and deeply. There is no real need to rush – time is going by fast enough on its own!
